For my day job, I illustrated this editorial illustration that represents how someone can get started with UX design. It’s posted on [my portfolio website](https://kris.black/work/editorial-illustrations?ref=krisblack.mymagic.page). The idea is to show the different paths someone can take to get to the same destination. I came up with the idea to draw a fantasy map. I’m pretty sure it’s because I started a re-watch of the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy the week I worked on this illustration.

The locations and geographical elements are named for aspects of the job as a UX designer. This is probably the most fun project I’ve had at my day job. That’s saying a lot because I really enjoy the work I do. It’s a great place to work and I get to utilize my interests in visual design and writing code for websites.

I’m considering making more fantasy maps. My wife is a wonderful artists and makes her living selling her art at local art and vendor markets. I go to all her events and it’s made sense to us if I started doing the same thing with my art. My idea is to make fantasy maps of where we live to sell at these local events. I think it’ll be a nice way to recognize the great people we meet and that we actually share a beautiful state that has incredible mountains, beaches, and everything in-between. Well, we don’t have a desert or tundra, but that could change (hopefully not).
